Sachsen-Anhalt bleibt Spitzenreiter, wenn es um die Ansiedlung von Unternehmen der Solarbranche geht. Das Solar Valley ist eines der schnellstwachsenden Industriegebiete in Europa mit Fokus auf die Solarindustrie und ihre Zulieferer.
Fast 20 Prozent der weltweit und 90 Prozent der in Deutschland produzierten Solarzellen kommen aus Sachsen-Anhalt. Mit 65 Prozent der Fertigungskapazitäten der Photovoltaikindustrie ist Solar Valley der beliebteste Investitionsstandort innerhalb Deutschlands. Mehr als 9 Milliarden Euro haben internationale Investoren seit 1991 in den Standort investiert. Im Ergebnis konnten über 3600 Arbeitsplätze geschaffen werden, u. a. bei Q-Cells und Sovello sowie bei Solibro, Malibu oder Sontor, das gerade mit der Sunfilm AG fusionierte und damit einer der größten Anbieter für Dünnschicht-Module auf Siliziumbasis ist. Die Region Thalheim/Bitterfeld-Wolfen ist eines der wichtigsten Ballungszentren im Bereich der Dünnschicht-Produktion.
Darüber hinaus haben fast alle Firmen ihren Hauptsitz im Solar Valley mit eigenen Forschungs- und Entwicklungskapazitäten. Die dichte Konzentration von Unternehmen und Forschungseinrichtungen begünstigt die Verfügbarkeit qualifizierter Arbeitskräfte und Kooperationen entlang der Wertschöpfungskette sowie aller Netzwerkpartner. Das Fraunhofer-Center für Silizium-Photovoltaik als weltweit einziges Zentrum für die Kristallisation und Materialanalyse von Solarsilizium stellt ein breites Dienstleistungsangebot bereit, das Mitglieder im Solar Valley auf kurzem Wege nutzen können.
Erst im Mai 2009 wurde Solar Valley als weltweit beste Region für Unternehmen der PV-Produktion mit dem Cell Award ausgezeichnet. Sowohl Wirtschaftsexperten als auch mehrere tausend Online-Wähler votierten für die Region in der Kategorie „Best Region for Manufacturing Solar Technologies". Bewertet wurden unter anderem die Dichte von Herstellern und Zulieferern, das Arbeitskräftepotenzial und die Infrastruktur für Industrie und Logistik. In der Endrunde setzte sich das Solar Valley gegen das ´Silicon Border´ in Mexico und den Bundesstaat Oregon, USA durch.

Saxony-Anhalt remains the market leader when it comes to the settlement of companies of the solar sector. The Solar Valley is one of the fastest growing industrial areas in Europe with its focus on the solar industry and its suppliers.
Nearly 20 percent of the worldwide and 90 percent of the nationally produced solar cells come from Saxony-Anhalt. Solar Valley, with 65 percent of the photovoltaic industry’s manufacturing capacity is the most popular investment
location within Germany. Since 1991 international investors have invested more than 9 billion Euros into this location. As a result, more than 3,600 jobs were created, for example, at Q-Cells and Sovello as well as at Solibro, Malibu or Sontor, who recently merged with the Sunfilm AG and is now one of the largest providers for silicon-based thin-film modules. The region Thalheim/Bitterfeld-Wolfen is one of the most important metropolitan areas in the field of thin-film production. Over and above that, nearly all companies have their headquarters in Solar Valley and their own research and development capacities. The dense concentration of companies and research institutions promotes the availability of skilled personnel and cooperations alongside the entire supply chain as well as with all networking partners. The Fraunhofer-Center for Silicon-Photovoltaics as the only centre for the crystallisation and material analysis of solar silicon worldwide offers a wide range of services, which the members of the Solar Valley can directly use. As recently as May 2009, Solar Valley was awarded the Cell Award as being the best region worldwide for companies of the PV production. Economic experts as well as thousands of online voters voted for the region in the category “Best Region for Manufacturing Solar Technologies”. Amongst other things, the density of manufacturers and suppliers, the potential of staff and the infrastructure for the industry and logistics were evaluated. In the final round Solar Valley successfully competed against the ‘Silicon Border’ in Mexico and the US state Oregon.
